Summary of the 2012-13 squash season
With 12 returning players and 7 new players, the Winsor
squash team broke another record right at the beginning of the season by
becoming the largest squash team in school’s history. Having six new players on
the JV team would make the season a building year for most teams, but this
young squad showed no fear and had an amazing season with 11 wins and only 2
losses. They started the season a bit shaky as they picked up a loss against St
Mark’s school, but the Wildcats moved on and continued with 7 wins in a row.
They beat their league opponents, NCDS, Dana Hall, Portsmouth and Concord not
just once, but twice in the season which would give them the League Championships
title if there was one for JV teams. Losing to Brooks School fired the JV team
up and they finished the season with a nail biting win over squash powerhouse,
Nobles and Greenough School.
The Varsity team had an almost perfect season with 13 wins
and only 1 loss which was on the very last week of the season against Nobles.
Winsor is clearly the powerhouse in their leagues as they didn’t just win every
match against EIL teams, but they also had to sit a couple players out to
balance the matches. Senior co-captains, Abigail Gabrieli and Jenny Walsh
grabbed the 4th league title in a row for the team. It was the
coaches’ dream come true when Varsity defeated ISL teams like St Mark’s,
Brooks, Middlesex and Phillips Academy this season. The team made history when
Winsor was ranked within the Top 16 teams nationwide and was placed in Division
I. The girls were working hard to face the biggest challenge of this season on
the High School National Championships, but Nemo, the blizzard disappointed
them when the tournament was canceled. At the end of the year the Wildcats
traveled to the New England Championships and played with the best of the best
players in Division A for the first time. The team finished an amazing 10th
place from 16 teams there which proves that Winsor’s squash belongs to Division
I without a doubt.
